Calcutta in 1945

Rare snaps of my favourite city from my collection:

Calcutta street scene, 1944."Heart of Calcutta's ""business district,"" 1945. This is the home of Whiteaway and Laidlaw, an excellent department store. It carried well-made British clothing and accessories along with the best of available Indian merchandise. It was the ""Times Square"" of Calcutta on Chowringee Road.

Streetside stall on Bentinck Street, downtown area of Calcutta, 1945

Traffic on Hooghly River bridge from Calcutta to Howrah Station, 1945"

Calcutta traffic officer at major city intersection. His ""sandwich board"" carried the order to ""STOP"" or to ""GO"" depending on which way he faced. He also used hand and arm signals to enforce the sign. His cap was brilliant red and his jacket and pants were white. Leggings were tan. He stood on the cut-down steel drum, a real figure of authority, 1945."

American combat veterans boarding troopship in Calcutta harbor for trip home after end of WWII, fall 1945. Trip required almost three months, including stop at Ceylon. Route was up through Suez Canal, the Med. Sea and across Atlantic. These images made with cheap camera, so not as sharp as could be desired, but they are authentic."

Matrimony Confusion

These days I have been taking help of a popular matrimony site for the obvious reason. I was shocked to find what some of the girls have really written in their profiles.
My idea of Bengali girls is changing fast and I am really lamenting why I didn’t foresee this and be a bit more serious when I had my moments.

This is what their profiles say:

1. "I like Indian Army, so only defense personnel are preferred" (there is nothing to laugh about, what’s wrong in it??)

2. "My partner should have interest in gym and bodybuilding" (I have interest in roadside dhabas, will that do??).

3. "The sweetest girl in kolkata is now big enough to get her prince charming…."(hahahahaha)
4. "Something as small as blooming roses can make me smile, something as small as…....." (Hello ...its a matrimony site)

5. "I love pets very much , so my life partner should also love pets….. "(dear dear…. what can I say)

6. "I want an aggressive life partner" ( Gulp…no comments)

7. "I don’t want to have kids….." (I cant believe this….she must have lost it)

8. "I want to lead a happy life" (who wants to lead an unhappy life dear??)

There are more to come, I will keep updating this post…….the more I discover.
So mere payare doston, try to get into a serious relationship ASAP, otherwise you too would have to go through this terrible ordeal.
Update:
But the award goes to.............candidate no. 9
She says "I like to analyze myself a bit. I am a simple yet bit complicated girl. But the research is not complete... this is my nature , when I am not working I fly in the clouds with my sweet imaginations or with my dear friends. I love to be with myself and be alone . I am not a loner, I am a very social person. I am working with BPO sector. As I love talking so thought this would be the best career for me.....".
(Hahahaha.....no, on a serious note....hahaha. Did you see that guys? She didn't finish there....I just couldn't go through further.....I would like to remain happily unmarried).

So for the time being, long live my local club, long live my TT Board partners [hey dont get me wrong here :)] and long live my adda at 8B Bus Stand.
